Plecând de la constatarea faptului că la Sf. Dionisie Areopagitul conceptul de ierarhie este un neologism (practic autorul Corpusului Areopagitic inventează acest cuvânt), compus din ἱερός (sfânt, sacru, sfințit) și ἀρχή (principiu, cauză, guvernare), autorul descrie ierarhia dionisiană nu pornind de la cunoscutele structuri angelice (trei niveluri și nouă cete), ci plecând de la definițiile dionisiene ale ierarhiei, care postulează o anumită dinamică axată pe modul în care harul dumnezeiesc (lumina dumnezeiască) este transmisă. Ierarhia este, mai degrabă, un principiu, nu doar o structură. Cunoscuta triadă τάξις (rânduială), ἐπιστήμη (știință) și ἐνέργεια (activitate), din Ierarhia cerească, precum și alte locuri din Corpus care definesc ierarhia, transformă înțelegerea ierarhiei dintr-o anumită structură, într-un context existențial dinamic, ce are ca scop imitarea activității dumnezeiești care se suprapune îndumnezeirii. Scopul ierarhiei nu este acela de a contempla o poziție superioară sau de a înainta spre o anumită poziție superioară ca scop în sine, ci este acela de a înainta în cunoaștere și luminare, de a deveni din ce în ce mai transparent („oglinzi transparente”) față de lumina dumnezeiască. Ierarhia nu presupune o evoluție cantitativă de poziții, ci o creștere calitativă în viața spirituală. Faptul că Sfântul Dionisie construiește dinamic ierarhia și nu se axează exclusiv pe o creștere de poziție, ci pe una interioară, este semnalat ca diferență semnificativă între un sistem ierarhic neoplatonic și unul de conținut creștin. În primul caz, accentul cade pe cunoaștere ca sursă unică de înaintare strategică în relație cu universul. În cel din urmă, accentul cade pe sursa ierarhiei care dă sens întregului construct existențial, prin harul dumnezeiesc care devine liant al întregului context ierarhic. Se dezvoltă înțelegerea unei ierarhii care nu accentuează structura ierarhică, ci dinamica harului dumnezeiesc în interiorul ierarhiei, deși aceasta nu contrazice în niciun context elementele de structură ale ierarhiei. În continuare, autorul postulează două posibilități de înțelegere a ierarhiei dionisiene. Prima interpretare este din perspectivă metafizică, unde accentul cade pe structura ierarhică înțeleasă ca posibilitate armonică a lumii, în care finalitatea existențelor poate fi determinată pozitiv prin îndumnezeirea omului. Se evidențiază o solidaritate harismatică a întregii creații care asumă activitatea harului. Această solidaritate este fundamentată pe realitatea participării, care se realizează, în viziune dionisiană – în acord, de altfel, cu întreaga moștenire patristică –, nu conform ființei, ci prin lucrarea harului. În sens strict, o ierarhie metafizică este mai apropiată de neoplatonism decât una bazată pe o exegeză existențială. Din acest punct de vedere, a doua interpretare, cea în care ierarhia este explicată în cadre existențiale, este, din punct de vedere al autorului, mai aproape de natura genuină a Corpusului Areopagitic. Sunt oferite și exemple punctuale din textele areopagitice (Scrisoarea a 8-a, dar și alte locuri din Despre numirile dumnezeiești) care arată că ierarhia nu este definită exclusiv pe criterii morale, ci este un sistem în care lucrarea harului creează determinări în creație (în lumea îngerilor și în cea a Bisericii), prin care viața creștinului devine un răspuns la chemarea dumnezeiască spre curățire și spre înduhovnicirea vieții. Ținând cont de rolul harului în această structură ierarhică, care conturează finalitatea existenței prin îndumnezeire și participare la viața divină, autorul dezvoltă în partea a doua a studiului perspectiva relației dintre ierarhie și cosmologie. Ca parte centrală a demonstrației sale, autorul dezvoltă aici înțelegerea conceptului de ἱεραρχία în relație cu echivalentul său dionisian de θεαρχία. Acest lucru definește ierarhia ca un cosmos în relație cu dumnezeirea, sau cosmos care își potențează existența în relație cu sursa, cauza și finalitatea sa autentică. Acest lucru se face printr-o întindere aproape de limită a cadrelor în care cosmosul ierarhic poate să își manifeste determinările, sau, cu alte cuvinte, cosmosul ierarhic este definit prin legătura sau contactul cu Dumnezeu. Cosmosul nu este tearchic, ceea ce ar însemna un sistem panteist, de inspirație neoplatonică, ci cosmosul este ierarhic, ceea ce înseamnă că în sinteza dionisiană datele Revelației (Sfânta Scriptură și experiența liturgică a Bisericii) sunt armonizate cu dinamica pe care harul o asigură întregii creații, actualizându-i sensul. Prin ierarhie, se păstrează caracterul unitar al creației, se păstrează dinamica acesteia, dar se evită uniformizarea panteistă a cosmosului. Argumentele și concluziile autorului sunt bazate și pe elemente din literatura de specialitate (Alexander Golitzin, Ysabel de Andia, Marinela Vlad, Eric David Perl etc., ale căror exegeze ale ierarhiei dionisiene cuprind, concluziv, deși cu nuanțe diferite, date similare). În finalul studiului, autorul își propune să treacă în revistă o listă de contribuții sistematice în teologia dogmatică ortodoxă și în cosmologia contemporană, care să fi valorificat ierarhia dionisiană nu doar din perspectiva structurilor respective, angelice și bisericești, ci și din perspectiva unei coerențe cosmologice pe care raportarea la har, ca realitate dinamică unificatoare, să o poată contura. Se remarcă faptul că dintre mai mulți autori, singurul care a sesizat cu profunzime moștenirea autentică a ierarhiilor dionisiene, în care accentul cade pe unitatea creației asigurată de lumina harului și pe direcția unitară a creșterii spirituale spre iluminare și îndumnezeire, este părintele Dumitru Stăniloae, prin conceptul de „sobornicitate angelo-umană”.

Characteristic of postmodernity from the perspective of the virtual environment is the breaking of the link between image and meaning. Exposure to numerous images on the Internet has not given users the opportunity to enhance knowledge through the intuition and internalization of meanings beyond the images. On the contrary, a regression can be observed in this regard. One explanation could be that the virtual environment has depleted the symbolic value of images. Images no longer refer to the lofty meanings of the things/acts/people they represent; instead, they have become self-referential. The logic of the image in the virtual space is autonomous, closed; it no longer mediates the relationship between humans and ineffable realities, as symbols did in traditional societies. Instead, images in the digital environment are self-sufficient, leaving consciousness captive to the concrete world. In the digital environment, the image no longer serves as a mediator between the sensible and the intelligible; it is no longer a representation of something but has become the exact representation of reality. The digital image is detached from its original and becomes the only original. The abundance of images proposed by the virtual environment is, in fact, inflation that, far from enriching the symbolic universe of humanity, impoverishes and distorts it. The Internet ultimately proposes and cultivates its own imaginary, suspending thought.

Similar to the magic of the Renaissance culture, the virtual environment ope­rates on the collective imaginary through the power of fiction, using phantasms that, once accepted, immerse individuals in a mental state that is uncertain, permeable to ideas and concepts that consciousness would normally reject. The virtual environment offers infinite possibilities to the human imagination to navigate the territory of fiction but simultaneously uses fiction to instrumentalize imagination for the manipulation of personal and collective consciousness. The imaginary of cyberspace enhances desires through excessive sensory stimulation and magical techniques reminiscent of those described by Giordano Bruno.

The Orthodox Theology has given special attention to the image not only in the context of the iconoclastic dispute but also in encounters with various philosophical systems. All things forming the visible reality are considered to be images of divine reasons, and human reason has the capacity to know these reasons through contemplating images and discovering increasingly higher meanings that place it in a deeper and more intense communion with God. Pure images of things are not self-referential or autonomous; they are transparent and allow human reason to penetrate beyond them to understand the unseen reality of the world. Moreover, reason has the capacity to create images as a reflex of imitating the Creator. From this perspective, imagination, as part of reason, has the sense of a creative power of the soul working on nature towards its spiritualization. As long as it does not substitute for the Creator and cultivates communion with Him, humanity is a co-creator or a partner of the Creator through the actualization of multiple passive virtualities, as discussed by Father Dumitru Stăniloae. However, this power does not manifest in a fantastical way by creating fantasies, nor is it used to mentally represent God or give Him a form or image like those processed by the senses.

The creative imagination of humans is rooted in reality; it does not create a hyperreal. It works on reality; it does not create parallel realities and autonomous fantastic worlds. Fantastical imagination is an imagination diverted from its primordial functions. Through this, humans enter a fantastic world, actively participating in its actions, while authentic creative imagination keeps humans inserted in reality and capable of using their will. In spiritual life, anchoring in reality is essential, and transcending sensible reality is not achieved through fantastical manipulation but through its transcendence and transfiguration in the communion with God.

Devoid of symbolism, self-referential, dislocated from the relationship with the object it represents, becoming the object itself, manipulated through the power of fiction, and transformed into a phantasm, the digital image becomes an expression of existential hermeticism. An image closed in on itself or presenting itself as the ultimate reality is an idol image. The idol image is an image that retains for itself the attention of the viewer, much like the idol retains for itself the worship due to God. The idol confiscates attention and concerns, enclosing them in the immanence plane, blocking thought, and paralyzing feeling so that they do not penetrate beyond its image. The idol is any opaque image, any image that becomes the object of attentional devotion, not necessarily of ritual devotion. The digital image is an object-image or the object itself. Through digitization, and therefore objectification, the image is amputated of its primordial function of revealing divine reasons. From this perspective, the objectification of the image is a diversion of its symbolic function and, as such, an idolatry. Furthermore, the digital image is an idol because it enslaves humans, provoking the appetitive part of the soul and intensifying the desires of the body. Stimulating desires through images is the key factor in building fidelity to the idol and the ingredient of dependence on it. Therefore, idolatry is always related, as a consequence, to debauchery, that is, unrestraint from what pleases the body through satisfying desires. Last but not least, the digital image is an idol because it robs humans of the desire to discover the world. The imagology of the digital world is abundant and sufficient, so humans no longer need to move to other spaces to see images. All images are already in the virtual space and can be admired here, without any effort that could pull humans out of the immobility and numbness specific to gazing at idols. Thus, the idol image confiscates not only the mind of humans but also captures their bodies in a static position and existential immobility.

To be spiritually edifying, the image must remain in relation to the word and point beyond sensory reality. To be a means of spiritual growth for humans, the image must no longer be itself but must allow the reality it represents to be glimpsed through it, becoming increasingly transparent so that the represented reality can be seen and understood better. The authentic image is the kenotic image, and the kenotic image par excellence is the icon. Unlike the idol, the icon is only a symbol of a spiritual reality but is not the reality itself. On the contrary, the icon, despite its aesthetic and harmonious beauty, steps back to let thought and veneration move towards the prototype. The icon is not an objectified image; the person who venerates the icon is conscious that they venerate God and the saints, but they do not consider that they venerate the materials from which it is made. Moreover, they do not even perceive the material presence of the icon but only feel the grace presence of the One with whom they enter into dialogue through its mediation. Unlike the increasingly detailed and pixel-concentrated digital image, the icon simplifies forms and colors to avoid captivating the senses and, especially, to avoid stimulating desires. Nothing in the composition of the icon electrocutes emotions, as digital images do, and it does not arouse bodily desires but, on the contrary, stimulates the soul in a clean and harmonious movement towards the spiritual essence of reality.

Therefore, all images that are not icons, meaning they are not the actual objects of worship and veneration by Christians, should be iconic images. To be an iconic image means to remain a transparent medium for the divine reasons placed in objects and for the ultimate meanings and purposes of these objects. The iconic image is an image that does not provoke desires and cultivates harmony; it is an image that does not inflame the body and does not shake the soul but guides the mind through shapes and colors, textures and lights, towards God. The iconic image does not isolate humans in a hermetic relationship, idolatrous in nature, with an object but places them in a personal relationship with other humans and with God. The iconic image is necessarily an image-communion.

The author fruitfully reflects about the different aspects of the endurance, emphasizing that, through patience, one not only purifies from thoughts and possible personal passions and weaknesses, but one becomes a co-worker with the Holy Spirit in bringing to fruition the saving work of Christ in the entire created order. The new anthropological demand, marked by the work of Christ, implies the commitment to make this new existence in Christ visible in every person and in every part of the universe. But to reveal this new content, attitude and witness requires patience, that is, patience to allow the saving consequences of the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ the Saviour to be revealed and understood; in other words, it means to understand who and what we are in Christ. From this point of view, the author considers that Christian patience is nothing other than the extent to which human person allows God’s work to be revealed to oneself, in order to give meaning to one’s whole existence, marked by hardship, suffering, temptation or any other kind of limitation.

In this gnoseological and prophetical framework, in which patience seeks to make intelligible, here and now, an event that does not seem to have any immediate meaning, the virtue of patience acquires a particular importance, not only in ecclesial-ascetical practice, but also in the hectic structure of our societies. If, in a spiritual context, its effect cannot and must not be reduced to a mere practice of fighting against impure thoughts that seek to disorient the human spirit and produce despair, in the ultra-accelerated and technologized societies in which modern human being lives, patience can save one from the torment of sadness, depression and meaninglessness. In the light of divine revelation and spiritual guidance, the anxiety and panic of modern people can be tamed by the work of patience, if life is no longer seen as a race, but as an unfolding story whose future chapters are hidden in the experience of daily encounters, which only come to fruition to the extent that one ceases to believe that one alone can control daily events and seeks the help of those around oneself.

In the same way, this dimension of patience, in which one becomes aware of the existence of a meaning still hidden in the present state of human existence, must influence not only the relationship of Christians between themselves and God, not only the relationship between human beings, but also the relationship between the various Christian traditions, and even the relationship between the various religious traditions. Everything must start from the renewing fact of the Incarnation of Christ, which shatters all the categories and all the meanings that the human being has given to the idea of humanity and human relationships. And if patience, in the ascetic practice, refers to the idea of waiting on the horizon of a meaning to be disco­vered, then our dialogue, especially within Christian communities, should be one that resists every temptation to victimization, hasty decisions, accusations and vain glorification.

In conclusion, the author considers that patience, seen from the perspective of the consequences that are about to appear on the horizon or are already visible, plays an essential role in knowing God’s economy. In and through the act of patience, one “offers” God space and time in his own creation. Moreover, the manifestation of patience in the face of a difficult situation reflects the understanding and acceptance of God’s invitation toward human beings to build their life on the divine revelation brought into the world by his Son.

În teologia primelor două secole s-au păstrat doar câteva date fragmentare, care nu ne pot oferi o înțelegere precisă a învățăturii despre Fecioara Maria din epoca respectivă. Ceea ce este cel mai important, fecioria ante partum a Mariei, adică fecioria ei dinainte de momentul Nașterii lui Iisus, este deja percepută de Sfinții Părinți ca un fapt stabilit și ca un adevăr de credință. Ea este mărturisită explicit de Sf. Ignatie al Antiohiei (†110), Sf. Iustin Martirul și Filosoful (†165) și Sf. Irineu de Lyon (†202). În ceea ce privește teologia sec. al III-lea, pot fi evocate două personalități: Clement al Alexandriei (†215), care ia poziție în favoarea fecioriei in partu și post partum a Mariei, opunându-se astfel celor care considerau nașterea ei ca fiind normală sau naturală, și Origen (†253), care, deși apără cu fermitate fecioria ante și post partum, manifestă totuși anumite rezerve față de fecioria in partu. Ceea ce este cel mai important, Origen se situează printre primii autori creștini care au întrebuințat termenul teotokos cu referire la Fecioara Maria, termen folosit apoi de mulți alți Părinți și scriitori bisericești din secolul al IV-lea: Alexandru al Alexandriei (†326/328), Atanasie al Alexandriei (†373), Grigorie Teologul (†390), Grigorie de Nyssa (†394) etc.

Intitulată „Sfântul Chiril al Alexandriei (†444): lupta pentru Theotokos”, prima parte a acestui studiu pune în lumină contribuția excepțională a ierarhului alexandrin la edificarea și asumarea în corpusul doctrinar a termenului Theotokos. Opunându-se patriarhului Nestorie al Constantinopolului, care propune pentru Fecioara Maria recunoașterea cel mult a titlurilor de Christotokos („Născătoare de Hristos”) sau Theodokos („Primitoare de Dumnezeu”), clamând caracterul inovator al lui teotokos, Sf. Chiril luptă pentru legitimarea și asumarea termenului Theotokos, subliniind deja, pe baza unor scrieri ale Sfântului Atanasie al Alexandriei, caracterul lui tradițional. Din Fecioara Maria nu se naște doar natura umană a lui Hristos, așa cum opinează simpatizanții dioprosopismului, ceea ce i-ar conferi Mariei calitatea limitativă de „Christotokos”, ci se naște Însuși Fiul lui Dumnezeu întrupat, adică Ipostasul divin al Fiului care asumă în sine natura umană prin lucrarea Duhului Sfânt. Mai mult, Sf. Chiril nu se opune termenului Christotokos decât în măsura în care el își prezervă fundamentul dioprosopist, conferit lui de Nestorie. Odată recunoscută Fecioarei Maria calitatea de Theotokos, titlul de Christotokos capătă un alt fundament, în sensul de „Născătoare a Celui uns de Dumnezeu” în pântecele Fecioarei, putând fi astfel atribuit Maicii Domnului.

A doua parte a prezentului studiu, intitulată „Sfântul Ioan Damaschin (†749): sinteza patristică”, rezumă elementele de ordin theotokologic ale gândirii acestui Sfânt Părinte, în baza a patru dintre scrierile sale omiletice, în care sunt accentuate: sfințenia, purureafecioria, maternitatea divină și puterea mijlocitoare a Maicii Domnului. Dată fiind absența în tradiția biblică a datelor referitoare la nașterea, copilăria și adormirea Maicii Domnului, Sf. Ioan împrumută multe elemente din tradiția apocrifă, printre care și învățătura despre înălțarea cu trupul la cer a Fecioarei Maria, după trei zile de la Adormirea și așezarea ei în mormântul din Ghetsimani.

În cele din urmă, a treia parte a acestui studiu este intitulată „Sfântul Grigorie Palama (†1359): Maria, model de isihast” și prezintă în formă concentrată două particularități de ordin theotokologic ce se desprind din scrierile palamite. Prima particularitate face referire la calitatea de model de isihast atribuită Fecioarei Maria și se întemeiază pe istorisirea despre sălășluirea Mariei în Sfânta Sfintelor a templului din Ierusalim până la vârsta adolescenței. Străduindu-se să contracareze scepticismul unor umaniști bizantini ai vremii sale cu privire la istoricitatea acestei tradiții, Sf. Grigorie îi acordă un spațiu considerabil în omiliile sale, descriind locuirea Mariei în templu în termenii unei vieți isihaste: tânăra fecioară practică „sfânta isihie” în adâncul Altarului și Îl contemplă pe Dumnezeu în rugăciune și tăcere. A doua particularitate a reflecției palamite ține de funcția sau lucrarea mijlocitoare a Fecioarei Maria între Dumnezeu și creație: ca „sursă și rădăcină a bunătăților veșnice”, Fecioara Maria este cea care dăruiește sfinților întreaga sfințenie și doar prin ea se împărtășesc ei de Dumnezeu. Preasfânta Fecioară este mijlocitoarea harului și a vieții dumnezeiești, atât în această viață, cât și în cea de apoi, atât pentru oameni, cât și pentru îngeri.

În concluzie, putem identifica trei aspecte centrale ale demersului theotokologic al Părinților Răsăriteni: pururea-fecioria – datorată sfințeniei exemplare a vieții Mariei și lucrării harului divin asupra ei, maternitatea divină și funcția mijlocitoare. Aceste trei dimensiuni au un fundament hristologic profund, în măsura în care ele nu își pot afla sursa altundeva decât în relația ontologică și afectivă a Fecioarei Maria cu Fiul ei, Iisus Hristos, Dumnezeu adevărat și Om adevărat.

Later, he will be appointed professor of Dogmatic theology at the Orthodox Faculty in Bucharest. Dissatisfied with the scholastic approach of theology, Father Stăniloae turned to the writings of the Russian theologians from the Parisian diaspora, which he referred to in a critical way. During the interwar period, Father Stăniloae became familiar with existentialist philosophy and German dialectic theology, especially that of Karl Barth. In the following period, he made known the basic tenets of his theological approach, those of deepening the tradition of the Holy Fathers and living the Christian ideal in a modern society, which led him to explore the distinction between God’s essence and His uncreated divine energies, as formulated by St. Gregory Palamas in the 14^th century. The Romanian theologian translated the Philokalia into Romania and, in 1978, he authored the three monumental volumes of his Orthodox Dogmatic Theology. Naturally, Father Dumitru Stăniloae became an emblematic theologian of Eastern Orthodox spirituality. His theology synthesizes and updates the tradition of patristic spirituality, the great currents of contemporary thought and philosophy, the depth of Romanian theology, the experience in prison and personal prayer, definitively marking the perspective of contemporary theology. This is why Father Stăniloae was called the greatest contemporary Orthodox theologian. His writings are the result of a constant reading of the Holy Fathers of the Church, so that his theology combines, equally, the ethos of the Philokalia and modern philosophy. The theology of Father Stăniloae is not an intellectual one, although his texts abound in scientific or philosophical knowledge and information, but a revelation of the mystery of the Person of the Son of God and a sharing of eternal life. His way of doing theology is patristic, but at the same time also modern, offering solutions to the many problems of the contemporary human being. The work of Father Stăniloae is an important theological treasure, which obliges us to follow his example by developing a theology that is rooted in the spiritual tradition of the Church Fathers, which he clothed in the language of today’s world and in which any theological dialogue involves interaction with science, philosophy, culture and arts. The bright face and the sober air of his scholarly, thoughtful, meditative profile reveal the spiritual image of the great Romanian theologian. Father Stăniloae displayed a special delicacy and gentleness in human interactions, an overflowing gentleness and a fraternal love, the essential features of a Christian. Father Stăniloae offered us a lesson on how to combine theology and spirituality, placing himself in the service of Christian faith and the living word of God, which goes against the trend of secularization and the loss of the spirit of the mystery, as well as against any theology of a rationalist-scholastic type, which prefers speculation to the detriment of prayer.
